Trading Standards warn on sale of counterfeit goods
The Trading Standards Service has warned shopkeepers today to sell genuine designer clothing or risk prosecution and fines after counterfeit goods were seized from a Co Antrim retailer.
Trendyzone Ltd, based in Northcott Shopping Centre, Glengormley, was fined a total of £3,000 for possession and sale of garments marked with a counterfeit trademark. The case was heard recently in Belfast Magistrates Court.
Trading Standards officers seized 67 separate items from the premises which were marked with GAP, Adidas and Reebok trademarks.
Commenting on the seizure, a Trading Standards spokesman warned: “This penalty should be seen as a warning to retailers who do not take proper steps to make sure that the goods they sell are authentic.
“TSS do not just monitor markets and casual stalls for the sale of fake goods, we also carry out random checks in shops across Northern Ireland.
“It is important for retailers to make sure that their suppliers are reputable and to contact the Trading Standards Service for advice should they have any reservations.
"A simple telephone call to 028 90253900 could save the business a fine and the loss of their goods.”
