Violent Clashes Follow Shamrock Rovers/Linfield Match
A football match between Dublin's Shamrock Rovers and Belfast's Linfield ended with violent clashes between fans and riot police on Monday night.
Linfield lost the Setanta Cup tie, which was held at Windsor Park in south Belfast.
Flares are reported to have been thrown from the North Stand of the stadium, which is where Shamrock Rovers fans were seated.
It has also been reported that a section of Rovers fans clashed with riot police.
Trouble also occurred between the two teams when they met for the first leg of the quarter final tie in Dublin last week.
That game finished with Linfield trailing 4-1. Last night's match ended 7-2 on aggregate.
Sports Minister Carál Ní Chuilín has condemned the trouble at Windsor Park.
"There is no place for this type of behaviour in sport," she said.
"So much work has gone on behind the scenes to ensure that football takes place in a welcoming and friendly environment.
"Destruction and violence have no place on the football terraces. It was for this reason that my Department worked in partnership with the Department of Justice in the development of legislation which introduced new criminal offences around spectator behaviour at major matches in the north.
"I call on both clubs to assist the authorities in any investigation that follows last night's disgraceful scenes."
