Prince to act as patron of George Cross Foundation

The Royal Ulster Constabulary George Cross Foundation has announced that the Prince of Wales has agreed to become its patron.

Foundation chairman Jim McDonald confirmed the acceptance today and said it would bring comfort to all those who had links to the force and who had suffered throughout Northern Ireland's 'Troubles'.

Mr McDonald described the news as "tremendous" and that he was delighted that the Prince had agreed to maintain a royal link to the Foundation.

The Foundation was set up under the Police (NI) Act 2000 for the purpose honouring the achievements of the RUC.

The force was awarded the George Cross by the Queen shortly before it was transformed into the Police Service of Northern Ireland in 2002.
