Fraud On The Increase - PSNI
Incidents of fraud in Northern Ireland are on the increase, according to the PSNI.
PSNI head of crime prevention, Inspector David Connery, said: "Provisional figures for the 12 months up to the end of February 2013 show there were 3,117 reports of fraud in Northern Ireland. This is an 11 percent increase on the figure for the previous 12 months to February 2012 (2,808)."
Consequently, the PSNI has launched a booklet in collaboration with An Garda Siochana and the Irish banking industry on how the public and businesses can protect against fraud.
The booklet, entitled 'Be Aware, Beat Fraud', is available on the PSNI website as a PDF download.
It has been produced in partnership with the Irish Payment Services Organisation and the Irish Banking Federation, under assistance from PSNI’s Organised Crime Branch.
The leaflet covers protection against identity fraud, staying safe online and advice on how to spot counterfeit bank notes.
The 16-page booklet also includes advice on keeping credit cards safe and using an ATM machine safely.
PSNI Chief Constable Matt Baggott said: "Fraud can take many forms and is often perceived to be a victimless crime. This is not the case. While it can mean a significant financial loss for companies and organisations, it can also have an impact on you, your family and friends."
