Avon Ireland Employees To Loss Jobs
Sinn Féin TD and enterprise jobs and innovation spokesperson, Peadar Tóibín has met with contractors previously operating with Avon Ireland after they heard news of the company's closure.
According to An Teachta Tóibín this closure is yet another symptom of a deeply sick domestic economy.
"Hundreds of employees will lose their jobs and thousands of others who operate as part time representatives will also lose pivotal household income.
"Many of these former representatives are women supplementing household income with badly needed revenue. Given that the recession already has pushed so many families to the edge of poverty, this announcement will have a devastating effect on some households.
"The FG/Labour government is nearly half way through its term and its failure to tackle the real economy continues to see domestic demand on the floor. The societal damage being done will have long and far reaching consequences."

North Antrim DUP MP Ian Paisley has welcomed the proposal put forward by Unite the union, which aims to save up to 500 jobs at the JTI Gallahers factory in Ballymena. The DUP MP has worked closely with representatives from the factory since 876 jobs were notified of the company decision to consider closure option.

Unemployment figure edges up in Republic of Ireland
The number of people out of work in the Republic of Ireland rose in May, according to the latest figures issued by the Central Statistics Office. Although the live register figure actually fell by 1,293 to 154,944, when adjusted for seasonal factors, it rose by 2,300 to 161,300. Compared to May 2001, the figure was also up 21,253.

Offshore Company Axes Jobs
Around 150 jobs in Aberdeen and Dundee have been axed after an offshore services company ceased trading. Oceanteam Power and Umbilical has been forced to close when the firm's holding company withdrew its financial support. Staff are based in Aberdeen, at workshops in Dundee and offshore.
