Newtownabbey Bomb Alert Ends
A bomb alert in Newtownabbey which resulted in the evacuation of a number of homes has ended.
The alert was put in place following the discovery of a suspicious object at Church Crescent at about midnight on Monday.
Army bomb disposal experts were sent to the scene. The road has now reopened and residents have returned.
Tyrone Business Fine Over Water Pollution
A business in County Tyrone has been fined £1,500 for pollution offences at Dungannon Magistrates' Court.
Donmac Farms Limited, Drumenny Road, Coagh, was fined for making a polluting discharge to a waterway.
The incident occurred on 16 November 2011, when a Water Quality Inspector inspected a waterway at the entrance to 74 Drumenny Road, Coagh, and observed dark grey fungal growth covering the bed of the waterway.
Foam was also observed to be present on the surface of the water.
500 metres of waterway was affected by the discharge.
The source was traced to the premises of Donmac Farms Limited and a sample taken at the time confirmed the discharge contained poisonous matter that was potentially harmful to fish life in the receiving waterway.
Pair Convicted Of Benefit Fraud
Two people have been convicted at Newtownards Magistrates’ Court for claiming benefits they were not entitled to.
43-year-old Nicola Gilmore of Marquis Street, Newtownards, claimed Income Support totalling £4,924 while failing to declare capital. She was given a 12 month conditional discharge.
Brian Hobbs, 62, of Inchmarnock Drive, Dundonald, claimed Severe Disablement Allowance totalling £6,758 while failing to declare employment.
He was given a four month prison sentence suspended for three years.
Road Closed Over Avalanche Risk
A road in County Down near the Mourne Mountains has been closed due to an avalanche risk.
It is thought the Kilkeel Road in Hilltown may remain closed for some time.
The Mourne Mountains has already been named as an area of risk, as the effects of recent blizzards begin to thaw.

The Department for Infrastructure (DfI), emergency services, and victim support groups have launched Road Safety Week 2024, highlighting the devastating impact of road traffic collisions. On average, one person loses their life on Northern Ireland's roads every week, with 57 fatalities recorded so far this year.

Over 800 young people from schools in Lisburn and Castlereagh attended a hard-hitting road safety message at the PSNI Road Safe Roadshow on 19 November. The roadshow, supported by AXA Insurance and the Northern Ireland Road Safety Partnership, aims to educate young drivers about the dangers of irresponsible driving.
