West Belfast Improvement Scheme Launches
A £379,000 environmental improvement scheme has been opened to regenerate the visual appearance of Conway Street in Belfast.
The scheme at the Falls Road in west Belfast is intended to complement recently completed restoration works to Conway Mill and assist with the promotion of tourism.
It is being funded by the Department for Social Development through its Belfast Regeneration Office’s Neighbourhood Renewal Programme.
The scheme involved:
- the installation of decorative street lighting columns
- resurfacing footpaths in Caithness natural stone paving
- planting of semi-mature trees
- provision of car parking bays
- installation of decorative gates and railings to Conway Mill
- installation of monolith of mill worker and loom boy
Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland opened the scheme.
He said: "This is good news for the people who live and work in Conway Street and for visitors to this neighbourhood. This scheme, together with the recently completed restoration project at Conway Mill, has helped create a more attractive environment for the local community and businesses and will assist with the promotion of tourism in this part of the City.
"By funding environmental improvement schemes, my Department is demonstrating, through the Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy, its commitment to improving the environment and image of disadvantaged neighbourhoods. I am determined these areas will become more attractive places in which to live, work visit and invest. This project is an excellent example of what can be achieved by partnership working between my Department, other statutory agencies, and local communities."
The Falls/Clonard Neighbourhood Renewal Area is one of the top 10% most deprived areas in Northern Ireland.
