High Pollution Over NI

High levels of air pollution are being monitored in the Belfast, Newry, Lisburn, Armagh and L'Derry areas, the Executive has announced.

In addition, there are moderate levels of pollution being monitored in the North Down, Ballymena, Strabane and Lough Navar areas.

The pollution is reportedly a result of easterly airflows recirculating polluted air from England, Wales and Continental Europe over Northern Ireland.

The build up of local emissions from vehicles and home heating is also adding to the problem.

Pollutant levels are expected to decline from today.

During periods of high air pollution, the symptoms of people with lung or heart disease may worsen. Healthy people are unlikely to experience any ill effects.

The Executive has released advice which applies when air pollution is 'high' or 'very high'.

Sensitive people may notice their symptoms worsen and may need to act to reduce the symptoms or their exposure to the pollution.

Asthmatics can find their symptoms will ease through use of a relief inhaler, while others affected can reduce the time they spend outdoors or avoid busy, congested streets.

If symptoms persist, affected people should consult with their doctor.

The public has also been reminded that the current high levels can be reduced by avoiding burning solid fuels if possible and burning only smokeless fuels in smoke control areas. It is also important to avoid lighting bonfires while pollution levels are high.

Drivers are advised only to use cars if absolutely necessary.
