Police Attacked With Petrol Bombs

L'Derry police were called to the Fountain area of the city on the evening of Friday 12th April to deal with youths throwing stones in the area.

When police arrived in the area at about 19:30, they were faced with petrol bombs being thrown towards their vehicles and the Fountain estate.

The Leckey Flyover had bins and rubbish pulled on to the road and set alight, blocking vehicular access.

Around forty youths were involved in the disorder and approximately 25 petrol bombs were thrown.

There were no reports of any injuries or arrests and the area was reported calm by midnight.

Area Commander, Chief Inspector Jon Burrows said: "I would urge all parents to know the whereabouts of their children and to ensure they are safe and not involved in incidents like we saw in the Fountain area last night. The possibilty of serious injury or death is very real when lethal weapons such as petrol bombs are thrown.

"The disorder in the area also put members of the community at risk as emergency services vehicles were unable to access certain areas of the city for a time last night. Young people engaging in serious disorder must be aware that when caught they will be dealt with through the courts and will face the consequences a criminal conviction will bring."

Scrap Dealer Handed Six-Month Sentence

A Lisburn scrap dealer has been given a six-month prison sentence, suspended for three years, at Craigavon Crown Court after pleading guilty to a number of illegal waste offences.

53-year-old Edwin John Tate of Moira Road, Lisburn (trading as Tate Scrap Metal) was found guilty on four charges.

A confiscation investigation is now underway and is being carried out by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency Financial Investigation Team.

The sentencing relates to an incident on April 2011, when officers from the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) Environmental Crime Unit visited a site to the rear of 262 Moira Road, Lisburn, where they observed a range of waste metals on site.

These included beams, vehicle parts, engines, road signs, oil drums, skips filled with waste including scrap metal, white electrical goods and household waste. Officers also observed a mechanical digger, grab, crushing machine and baling machine on site.

On the same date officers visited a site at Bog Road, Lisburn, also owned by Mr Tate. The front portion of the field had been infilled with soil and stone and covered with an array of waste vehicle parts including lights, shock absorbers, head rests, brake shoes and tyres, as well as various pieces of metal, plastics and construction and demolition waste.

A NIEA spokesperson said: "The criminal activities involved in this case are a cause of concern to the Agency and show a complete disregard for the environment and regulation by the defendant. We will continue to monitor the site and take further action if such activity be found to be occurring again."
