NI Unemployment Increases
Unemployment in Northern Ireland continues to increase, with the numbers for the period December 2012 – February 2013 showing a 0.4% increase on the previous quarter and a 1.5% increase on the same period the previous year.
The latest report from the Labour Force Survey shows the Northern Ireland unemployment rate was above the UK average rate (7.9%).
It was, however, lower than the European Union (10.8%) and Republic of Ireland (14.7%) rates for January 2013.
Results for the period show that 62.2% of those unemployed in Northern Ireland have been unemployed for one year or more, up 17.5% from one year ago.
The unemployment rate for 18-24 year-olds is 21.3%, up 4.3% over the year.
Comparable figures for the three months November - January 2013 estimate the NI unemployment rate for 18-24 year olds at 23.8%, compared to the UK average rate of 18.8%.
The number of people claiming unemployment benefits stood at 64,800 in March 2013, up 100 from the revised figure for the previous month.
The Northern Ireland claimant count rate in March 2013 was 7.2%, making it the second highest among the twelve UK regions. The UK rate was 4.6%.
Over the year, the Northern Ireland claimant count has increased by 5.9% (3,100), compared to a decrease of 4.82% in the UK.
The annual increase in Northern Ireland was the highest among the UK regions.
267 confirmed redundancies were notified in March 2013, compared to 116 in February 2013 and 372 in March 2012.
There has been a 68% increase in the number of confirmed redundancies over the last year to 31 March 2013: 3,361 compared to 1,999 in the previous year.
Commenting on the figures, Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster said: "While unemployment is up over the quarter, it is still broadly the same as that reported last month.
"Provisional results from the Index of Services report better news for the economy with an increase of 0.7%, in real terms, in output for Northern Ireland from the previous quarter. This has been driven by increases across three of the main service sectors including Business services and finance, Transport and the Other Services sectors. Service sector output was also up over the year.
"The provisional results from the Index of Production also show improvement, with a rise (0.3%) over the quarter to Q4 2012."
The Minister continued: "The latest results indicate some improvements in output though no evidence of a decrease in unemployment. We have to see these changes in the wider context of limited growth in the UK economy and continued recession in the euro area in 2012.
"We can’t hope to escape the difficulties in the global economy, but we can continue to lay the foundations of a stronger local economy to take advantage of recovery when it comes.
"I would actively encourage businesses to utilise the additional funding support that has been made available through the Northern Ireland Spin Out Funds (NISPO) – Invest Growth and Proof of Concept, as well as the new Finance Voucher initiative which provides support for small businesses to develop good funding proposals."
