Big Weekend Tickets Sell Out In An Hour

Tickets for BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend in L'Derry were sold out within the space of hour as they went on sale this morning.

The 37,500 tickets for the event were initially supposed to go on sale on Tuesday, but due to a technical glitch the date was moved to Wednesday.

Local residents were given preference for tickets, with 45% reserved for those living within the Derry City Council area; 45% were reserved for those resident in the rest of Northern Ireland and the remaining 10% for other audiences across the UK and those in the Republic of Ireland.

The event will take place at Ebrington over the Spring bank holiday weekend in May, with Olly Murs and two Door Cinema Club already having been confirmed.

Ben Cooper, Controller BBC Radio 1 and Radio 1Xtra said: "It's great to see the enthusiasm and excitement in the city for BBC Radio 1's biggest event of the year.

"We will be bringing some of the biggest DJs and artists in the world and demand has been huge, so I'm sorry if you didn't get a ticket. You will though be able to catch all the action on Radio 1, BBC Three, on mobile and our website."

Radio 1 has warned against the secondary sale of tickets, as some have already appeared on ebay at prices amounting to hundreds of pounds.

Radio 1 says it "reserves the right to cancel" any tickets that have been sold on.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Radio 1 said: "Tickets for BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend Derry~Londonderry are free and we work with those running major auction websites and sales outlets to have posts offering tickets for sale or trade removed.

"Those offering tickets for sale are breaking the Terms & Conditions they agreed to during the booking process and we reserve the right to cancel them."
