Farmer Convicted Of Polluting Waterway

A farmer from Limavady, County L'Derry, has pleaded guilty to making a polluting discharge to a waterway.

Mr William Purcell, of Ballyquin Road, was fined £500 plus court costs at Limavady Magistrates Court yesterday.

The incident occurred on 10 April 2012, when a Water Quality Inspector inspected an unnamed tributary of the River Roe at Ballyquin Road, Limavady, and observed the waterway to be visibly polluted, discoloured and with a "strong agricultural odour".

In excess of 700 metres of waterway was affected by the polluting discharge.

The source of the polluting discharge was determined to be slurry running off fields adjacent to the Ballyquin Road, which were under the control of Mr Purcell.

A sample taken at the time of the incident confirmed that the discharge contained poisonous, noxious or polluting matter which was potentially harmful to fish life in the receiving waterway.
