Soldiers to play in historic GAA match

British soldiers stationed in Northern Ireland are set to play members of the Irish army in a GAA challenge match later this month.

The match, the first of its kind in Ireland, follows last year's decision by the GAA to scrap its controversial Rule 21, which banned members of the security forces from participating in Gaelic games.

The British Army team will comprise soldiers, sailors and airmen as part of an overall British Combined Services GAA team. They have been in regular training for the game against the Irish Defence Forces who issued an invitation to the military stationed in the province.

The match follows last October's ground breaking game in which the PSNI played their Irish counterparts in a match in Dublin.

The game ended in a 1-18 to 2-08 victory for the Garda team.
