Police chiefs call for monitoring of Ombudsman
The new head of the police Superintendents` Association has called on the Government to appoint a commissioner to monitor the work of Ombudsman Nuala O'Loan.
South Belfast police chief Stephen Grange said changes were needed to the system because many commanders have a lack of confidence in the current complaints process.
Addressing the Association's AGM in Co Antrim, Mr Grange said such worries could only be put to rest by introducing "a complaints mechanism whereby individual officers who feel aggrieved about the conduct of the Ombudsman`s office can have their grievances heard with confidence".
Tensions between Mrs O'Loan and the PSNI have been high ever since the Ombudsman issued a damning report on the Omagh bomb atrocity investigation.
Although the RUC was in charge of investigation at the time many officers which were part of that team are now officers within the PSNI.
At present the Ombudsman and her office is accountable to Parliament. However, Mr Grange has called for a more accountable scheme that members of the police service can access with greater ease.
