Belfast bank fined following window cleaner fall
The First Trust Bank has been fined £2,500, and ordered to pay £4,000 in costs, after a window cleaner was badly injured after being knocked off a ladder outside a branch of the Bank in Belfast.
Belfast Magistrates Court heard yesterday how the window cleaner was knocked off his ladder by an outwardly opening automatic door which was operated from a control room inside the bank, despite the fact that CCTV cameras were covering the area.
Belfast City Council’s Health and Environmental Services Department first brought the prosecution to the Magistrates Court in February 2002, but at that time the case was dismissed. The Council subsequently appealed this decision and Lord Chief Justice Carswell ruled that the original decision was erroneous and that the case should be taken back to the Magistrates Court.
A spokesperson for Belfast City Council said: “This case should serve to highlight the need for employers to consider the safety of contractors whom they bring onto the premises, particularly when this is to carry out high risk activities such as working at a height."
At present, falls from a height in UK workplaces account for around 70 deaths and 4,000 serious injuries every year – with one of the main causes being falls from ladders.
