Ramsey Presents Petition To Save UU Nurseries

SDLP Employment and Learning Spokesperson Pat Ramsey has presented a petition to the Speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly on behalf of staff and students at the University of Ulster's Magee and Jordanstown Campus', stating their opposition to the closure of on-site nursery facilities.

Presenting the petition to the Speaker, Mr Ramsey said: "Parents are very worried that the nursery provision provide a vital social investment for the future, and clearly job losses will have an impact.

"I have met and am in continuous contact with parents and staff who are concerned at the possible closure of the crèche facilities at the University of Ulster at Magee, and at Jordanstown. Parents value their services and closure would cause considerable inconvenience and hardship.

"In particular, it occurs to me that with the increasing emphasis placed on early years intervention and the need for stronger childcare provision alongside the anticipated expansion of the Magee campus, it would be a retrograde step for the University to downgrade or privatise its Day Nursery.

"I am requesting that senior management at the University of Ulster would look again at these proposals and I am urging that the University to seek alternatives as it does not lend itself to key elements of the programme for the government Widening Participation, especially single mothers who will be further disadvantaged in terms of trying to study Third Level Education."
