QUB to unveil plans for £40m research facility

Queen's University, Invest NI and the Department of Employment and Learning are to invest almost £40 million to establish a new Institute of Electronics, Communications and Information Technologies (ECIT) in Belfast.

4NI has learned that ECIT, which will be built on the Science Park site at Titanic Quarter, will provide substantial research, development and hot-housing capability in the key technological areas of advanced digital, electronic communications and information technology.

As such the proposed Institute would represent the largest single investment in industry-focused research and development infrastructure in Northern Ireland's history.

It is understood that ECIT will undertake world-class research and the stimulation and growth of successful indigenous high-tech companies and act as a further attraction for high technology inward investment.
