Thales win multi-million pound missile deal
Thales has won a multi-million contract to supply missiles to South Africa.
The contract put at around £12.5 million is understood to involve the supply of the high-tech Starstreak air defence missiles for use South African defence forces.
Developed in Belfast by the former Short Missile Systems division the short-range missile system provides close in air defence capabilities.
Thales Chief Executive Miller Crawford said the company was delighted to have secured its first overseas export order for Starstreak in a very competitive market sector.
The Starstreak missile system comprises a lightweight multiple launcher assembly and a self-contained radar unit which is also supplied by Thales.
