Whiskey Distillery Approved For L'Derry

Irish whiskey drinkers will be celebrating the news that a new distillery is to be built in L'Derry, following planning approval.

Derry City Council has ratified Environment Minister Alex Attwood’s recommendation for the development.

The plans were put forward by Niche Drinks Company Ltd., which makes a range of cream liqueurs and ready-made cocktails.

The new distillery and factory will be built at Campsie in L'Derry.

Alex Attwood said: "I very much welcome Derry City Council’s backing for a new distillery in the city. The overall cost of this project is £15m and the proposal will create in the region of 250 local jobs.”

"This is a significant new development scheme which will benefit the city for many years, creating much needed employment in the area."

Derry City Council was consulted with the proposal at its meeting on 7 May. Elected members from all political parties welcomed the proposal and congratulated the applicants.

UTV Escapes ITV News Cutbacks
News operations at Ulster Television are to be saved from widespread cut-backs by the national broadcaster ITV. Neither UTV or its Scottish equivalent, STV are to be hit by the £40m cost-savings initiated by ITV. Both UTV and STV are independent companies and are not affected by the decision.
