Q1 Crown Court Cases Increase 10%
Figures released today show a 10% increase in the number of Crown court cases from January to March 2013, compared with the same quarter the previous year.
There were 477 Crown cases received during the first quarter, in comparison to 435 received during the same period in 2012.
The number of cases dealt with has increased by 16% from 508 in January to March 2012, to 587 for the same period in 2013.
656 defendants were received in Crown Court during January to March 2013, showing a 15% increase on the previous year, when 570 defendants were received.
757 defendants were dealt with, indicating an increase of 11% against the same period last year, when 679 defendants were dealt with.
The average time from committal to hearing for January to March 2013 was 160 days, compared with 146 days for the same period in 2012.
The average time from conviction to disposal was 52 days, compared with 50 days for the equivalent period in 2012.
In total there were 770 Crown court sittings for January to March 2013, compared with 730 for January to March 2012, indicating an increase of 5%.

Education Minister Paul Givan has responded to the announcement by several teachers' unions that they plan to ballot their members for industrial action over 2024/25 pay. Earlier this year, the Minister provided funding to successfully resolve the long-running industrial dispute over teachers' pay for 2021-24.

NI Unemployment Rate Reaches Lowest Level In A Decade
The unemployment rate in Northern Ireland has reached its lowest level in ten years, according to new figures. From September to November 2017 the rate was 3.8% and is now below the UK rate. It has decreased by 0.9% from the previous quarter and by 1.8% over the year.
