Talks Could Make 'NI Safer'

Talks between police, politicians and community representatives held in Cardiff over the weekend should make Northern Ireland safer this summer, a senior PSNI officer has been quoted as saying.

According to the BBC the talks were held in an effort to reduce tensions in the lead up to the marching season, with further talks planned to be held in Belfast.

The talks were described as, "candid, honest and frank", by assistant Chief Constable George Hamilton.

He was quoted by the BBC as saying: "The fact we've agreed to keep lines of communication open, even in difficult times and even when disorder ignites, is critically important.”

Adding, "they weren't just broad principles (agreed), but very practical steps to make Northern Ireland a safer place during the summer."
