New Prisoner Ombudsman Appointed For NI

The Justice Minister has today announced the appointment of Tom McGonigle as the new Prisoner Ombudsman for Northern Ireland.

The appointment was made following an open competition and Tom McGonigle will take up appointment on 1 June 2013.

Minister David Ford said: "The role of the Prisoner Ombudsman is a challenging and vital one in the criminal justice system. Tom McGonigle’s appointment will support the continued development of this important position. I am confident that he will bring his extensive experience and skills to the role and build on the excellent work of his predecessor.

"I would also like to record my sincere thanks to the outgoing Prisoner Ombudsman, Pauline McCabe, for the significant contribution she has made to the role. In her time in office, Pauline has played a great part in enhancing the independence and professionalism of the office and the prison service has benefited greatly from her investigations and recommendations for improvement. I wish her well for the future."

DAERA Minister Confirms Commitment to Deposit Return Scheme
DAERA Minister Andrew Muir has reaffirmed his commitment to introducing a Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) in Northern Ireland. The DRS is designed to encourage recycling by offering a monetary incentive for returning single-use drinks containers. The scheme will cover PET plastic, steel, and aluminium containers ranging from 150ml to 3 litres.
