Lord Mayor Calls For More Female Leaders

Belfast's Lord Mayor Alderman Gavin Robinson has said more needs to be done to encourage women into politics and leadership roles in Northern Ireland.

Alderman Robinson is expected to attend an event today to explore the practical solutions to increasing the number of women in politics in the region.

The event follows a US State Department scheme which brought together 10 women from NI and the Republic with their American counterparts to discuss the topic.

Alderman Robinson said: "Diversity in public life strengthens democracy and public confidence in it. Women are a majority of the population (51% in N Ireland) but this figure is significantly lower when it comes to political and public life. (19% of MLA's are women).

"The aim of the 'Women in Politics' event is to build a picture of the challenges and opportunities relating to increasing the number of women in politics to influence and deliver positive change in N Ireland. Discussions will focus on what needs to be done to change the face and the culture of politics in N Ireland and how to engage men in this transformational process."

The event will be held at Belfast's City Hall.
