£2.7m Invested In New NI Hospice

£2.7m is being invested by the Department of Health to support the construction of the NI hospice.

The new facility will provide 18 beds in single en-suite rooms with supporting facilities for staff, families and volunteers.

It will also feature a Day Hospice facility as well as a dedicated Education and Resource Centre and on-site parking.

Health Minister Edwin Poots said: "The support the NI Hospice gives to those in need of palliative and end of life care, in partnership with the Health and Social Care Trusts, is vital. I am therefore delighted to provide capital funding of £2.7m to enable NI Hospice to proceed with the replacement of this much needed facility. I would also like to commend the NI Hospice on its continuing fundraising activities through their innovative 'buy a brick' campaign."

Finance Minister Sammy Wilson said: "The Executive recognised that investing in this capital project was important and that the services it provides are vital to those families and friends who avail of them. The £54.5m of additional funding that has just been allocated to the Department of Health and Social Services and Public Safety as part of the June monitoring round will ensure that health service reforms can continue and that our hospitals and medical equipment including services such as those provided by the Hospice can be upgraded for the benefit of all."

Professor Dame Judith Hill, NI Hospice Chief Executive added: "The £2.7m committed by the Minister will allow us to lever additional funds and begin work on our new Hospice before the end of the year. I am confident that we will meet our appeal targets and build a legacy of hospice care for generations to come. We are grateful to the Minister and his colleagues for their foresight in supporting this vital project, and indeed to all those who have supported our 'Buy a Brick' campaign to date."
