Cowan and Murphy to discuss Stakeknife allegations

Irish Foreign minister Brian Cowan is expected to raise the Stakeknife affair with Northern Ireland Secretary of State Paul Murphy when they meet in London today.

Mr Cowan will want to know the details behind the affair in which west Belfast man Freddie Scappaticci was accused by a local newspaper of being an Army agent (codenamed Stakeknife) in the IRA.

However Mr Scappaticci denied the accusations and claimed he has remained aloof of the republican movement for the past 13 years.

Both governments will also discuss how they can advance the political process following last month's suspension of elections by Prime Minister Tony Blair.

They are also likely to examine human rights, criminal justice and policing, among other things.

Meanwhile, US Envoy to Northern Ireland, Richard Haass is to meet a Sinn Fein delegation today to discuss the peace process. It follows last night's meeting between President Bush's Special NI Advisor and Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble in Belfast.

Mr Haass also held talks with DUP leader Ian Paisley this morning. At the meeting Dr Paisley said he told Mr Haass that the Good Friday Agreement had not worked and a new agreement was required.
