Government official suspended following loan claims

A Government official has been suspended while the PSNI investigate a alleged misuse of funds by Omagh District Council.

Former Chief Executive of the Council, John McKinney has been suspended on full pay from his role as Chief Executive of the Special EU Programmes Body after is was alleged that a £140,000 loan was made by Omagh Council to Fintona Regeneration Initiative.

A house in Omagh and business premises in Fintona in Co Tyrone have been searched following an investigation by the Northern Ireland Local Government Auditor.

Policing Board locked in talks over Omagh investigation
The Northern Ireland Policing Board remained locked in talks for much of Thursday as they discussed the future direction the Omagh bomb investigation should take. The Board, which is made up of individuals from both sides of the political divide met on Thursday, February 7, in an attempt to hammer out a compromise at Clarendon Dock.

Omagh Bomb Suspect Acquitted
The only man jailed over the 1998 Omagh bombing was yesterday cleared following a retrial in Dublin. Colm Murphy, 57, from Co Louth, was imprisioned for 14 years in 2002 for conspiracy but won an appeal against his conviction in 2005 and was sent for a retrial in January this year at the non-jury Special Criminal Court in Dublin.

Two die in separate road accidents
A 19-year-old woman has died following a road traffic accident in Co Down early this morning. The accident occurred on the Camlough Road in Newry at the junction with the Derrymore Road at around 4am on Monday. The road remains closed as police continue their investigation into the crash.
