Six Convicted Of Benefit Fraud
Six people have been convicted at Belfast Magistrates’ Court today for claiming benefits they were not entitled to.
30-year-old Isaiah Harbison of Hallidays Road, Belfast, claimed Income Support and Housing Benefit totalling £4,777 while still working.
He has been sentenced to 100 hours community service and ordered to pay court costs of £34.
Heather Evans, 51, of Skegoneill Avenue, Belfast, claimed Jobseekers Allowance and Housing Benefit totalling £5,920 while failing to declare employment.
She was given 80 hours community service and ordered to pay court costs of £40.
Leigh McFarlane, 32, of O’Neill Road, Newtownabbey, claimed Jobseekers Allowance and Housing Benefit to the sum of £2,351 while he had been working.
He was given a 12 month conditional discharge and ordered to pay court costs of £68.
26-year-old Paula Crossan of Abbeyglen Drive, Newtownabbey claimed Jobseekers Allowance totalling £1,466 while failing to declare employment. She was fined £350 and ordered to pay court costs of £62.
Rhonda Smyth, 47, of Iveagh Drive, Belfast claimed Housing Benefit totalling £3,749 while failing to declare employment.
She was given a 12 month conditional discharge and ordered to pay court costs of £80.
35-year-old Arlene Blaney of Springvale Grove, Belfast claimed Housing Benefit totalling £2,107, despite having received a student loan.
She was given 75 hours community service and ordered to pay court costs of £50.

Minister Reacts To Teachers' Union Ballot Threat
Education Minister Paul Givan has responded to the announcement by several teachers' unions that they plan to ballot their members for industrial action over 2024/25 pay. Earlier this year, the Minister provided funding to successfully resolve the long-running industrial dispute over teachers' pay for 2021-24.
