Support Project For Older People Launches

A new project to support older people and provide training and information on local services and modern technology has been launched by Agriculture Minister Michelle O'Neill.

Disability Action's 'Age No Barrier' scheme is aimed at anyone over 65, to provide advice and support regarding benefits and local services within communities.

It will also provide training and support in the use of IT equipment such as laptops, tablets, telephones or other digital technology.

75 people will be trained and supported as Volunteer Peer Advocates, to provide skills and advice in their communities.

Launching the project at County Fermanagh Farming Society’s Annual Show, Minister O’Neill said: "Social isolation is a key concern for many older people living in rural areas and opportunities for social engagement are therefore extremely important in maintaining the health, well being and quality of life.

"Disability Action provides a valuable community service and this project will further support the inclusion of older people. I am totally committed to ensuring that the services which my Department provides are fully accessible for people with disabilities and I am very impressed with the valuable work that Disability Action is taking forward over the life of this project."
