Minister Announces Housing Led Regeneration Scheme
Housing Minister Nelson McCausland has announced a new programme to encourage regeneration in blighted spots across Northern Ireland through housing.
The Housing Led Regeneration Programme aims to use housing intervention as the main catalyst for local regeneration.
Minister McCausland visited some of the targeted areas today.
He said: "It is a great regret to me that many once vibrant areas across Northern Ireland have been condemned to dereliction, allowed to decline and become blighted by vacant and derelict properties, undeveloped land and poor infrastructure. The approach up to now has failed and is failing many communities and I am determined to put things right.
"I visited the northwest of England earlier this year to see a number of housing led regeneration schemes which have turned around areas which were in decline.
"The work will involve concerted social, economic and physical actions by my Department’s Housing and Urban Regeneration teams, together with support from the Social Security Agency.
Four areas have already been selected as meeting the initial selection criteria; Belfast’s Lower Oldpark/Hillview, Tiger’s Bay/Mountcollyer and Divis/Albert Street and Doury Road in Ballymena.
These areas will be selected for the piloting of the initiative.
The Department for Social Development says the programme could include initiatives such as the refurbishment of existing housing and new build provision, infrastructure improvements and programmes to tackle anti-social behaviour.

Crumlin Social Housing Scheme Opened
A new social housing scheme of three and four bedroom houses has been officially opened in Crumlin. The fourteen new homes for families on the social housing waiting list, is owned and managed by Habinteg Housing Association who funded the build, with support from the Department for Social Development.

The news was welcomed by Social Development Minister David Hanson MP, who said: "This is excellent news for people living in Glasvey, which is part of the Colin neighbourhood.

DAERA Minister Confirms Commitment to Deposit Return Scheme
DAERA Minister Andrew Muir has reaffirmed his commitment to introducing a Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) in Northern Ireland. The DRS is designed to encourage recycling by offering a monetary incentive for returning single-use drinks containers. The scheme will cover PET plastic, steel, and aluminium containers ranging from 150ml to 3 litres.
