Ford Launches Human Trafficking Education Pack For Children
Justice Minister David Ford has published the first educational resource pack designed to educate young people on the issue of human trafficking in Northern Ireland.
The resource pack is aimed at teachers of Year 10 and Key Stage 4 and has been produced in partnership between the Department of Justice, The Council for the Curriculum Examinations and Assessment and Freedom Acts.
Minister Ford said: "We cannot close our eyes to the fact that human trafficking is happening in Northern Ireland and raising the awareness of our young people to this crime is essential to enable them to spot the signs and to report any suspicions to the police or Crimestoppers.
"Earlier this year I published the Human Trafficking Action Plan and one of the key action points was to raise awareness amongst school pupils. This resource pack, the first of its kind, has all the relevant material in one place and will help teachers to get the message across about the nature and consequences of this evil crime."
The Minister urged schools to mark the EU Anti-Trafficking Day on 18 October 2013.
"I appreciate very much the efforts of those teachers and their pupils who are already contributing to the fight against human trafficking," he said.
"The revised curriculum is very flexible and it provides a number of opportunities for teachers to deal with important issues such as human trafficking. The development of this resource is particularly relevant to citizenship education, a compulsory element of the revised curriculum, which provides pupils with opportunities to explore human rights and social responsibility and equality and social inclusion.
"I would encourage all teachers to make use of this resource which is now available to all schools through C2k's managed ICT service."

Minister Reacts To Teachers' Union Ballot Threat
Education Minister Paul Givan has responded to the announcement by several teachers' unions that they plan to ballot their members for industrial action over 2024/25 pay. Earlier this year, the Minister provided funding to successfully resolve the long-running industrial dispute over teachers' pay for 2021-24.

MLAs Debate Human Trafficking Bill
MLAs are debating a human trafficking bill, drawn up by DUP peer Lord Morrow. It is understood that the new Bill contains a clause that would make it illegal to pay for sex, a clause that has been opposed by Justice Minister David Ford. However, both the DUP and Sinn Féin are understood to be in favour of the clause.
