Department Warns Over Bogus JobCentre Scam

The Department for Employment and Learning has warned the public over a bogus entry on its JobCentre Online website.

A false company posing as a legitimate employer recently posted a vacancy on the jobseekers' website, to which a number of clients have responded.

The Department understands that a number of applicants were subsequently asked to pay for criminal record checks.

The bogus company claimed these could be provided at a discounted rate agreed with Access NI.

The vacancy has now been closed and the PSNI has been notified.

A Department for Employment and Learning spokesperson said: "I would like to apologise to the individuals concerned for any distress that this bogus company may have caused. The Department has contacted all individuals who responded to the bogus company and a helpline has been set up for clients should they wish to get in contact with the Department. The helpline telephone number is 028 9025 2007 and is open during office hours (09:00 to 17:00 on weekdays)."

The Department has also launched an investigation into the incident.
