Newcastle Alert Declared A Hoax
A security alert in Newcastle, Co Down, has been declared a hoax.
On Wednesday, a suspicious object was discovered close to an Orange Hall in the Shimna Road area of the town.
Police and Army bomb experts were called to the scene to investigate while nearby roads were closed overnight.
A controlled explosion was carried out on the device and the alert was declared a hoax.
SDLP MP Margaret Ritchie said she was "deeply concerned" following the discovery of the object.
She said: "The people of South Down do not want to see this kind of threat to the safety of this community who long ago rejected the forces of terrorism when they endorsed the Good Friday Agreement.
"Orangemen are entitled to enjoy their premises as anyone else should be and unjustifiable threats of this nature are totally wrong.
"I would ask anyone with information regarding this device or who seen anything suspicious at the Hall to come forward to the Police immediately and assist them with their enquiries."
All routes around the town have now reopened.

Bomb Alert Was Hoax Says PSNI
A bomb alert in Newtownabbey has been declared a hoax. PSNI have described the security alert as an "elaborate hoax". The M5, was closed in both directions from Hazelbank to Doagh Road, on Tuesday night. All roads have re-opened.

A security alert in Lurgan, Co Armagh, has been called off after a suspicious object was declared a hoax by police. Police and army bomb experts attended the scene at New Line Recycling Centre on Tandragee Road on Friday morning. An alert was placed within the Craigavon Borough Council premises, which was then ended at around 13:00.
