National Museums NI Seeks New Board Members

Minister Carál Ní Chuilín is seeking to appoint a Chair and up to seven Trustees to the Board of National Museums NI.

The Minister is seeking to bring a wide range of interests and experiences to the Board.

Expressions of interest are welcome from applicants with an interest in serving the museums sector, including individuals who have not previously held positions in this area. National Museums includes the Ulster Museum, the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum, the Ulster American Folk Park and Armagh County Museum.

Commenting on the importance of these positions the Minister said: "The Board of Trustees of National Museums is responsible for our important and significant public collections. Its sites are amongst the most popular attractions and include the recently refurbished and award winning Ulster Museum.

"Trustees have an important role in contributing to learning, social cohesion and integration and reconciliation. The Board is expected to play a leading role in marking our decade of centenaries and have an important role in the growing tourism market for our local and international visitors."

Minister Ní Chuilín is encouraging women, ethnic minorities and people with disabilities to apply. She added: "Females are currently under-represented on the Board of Trustees and I would therefore particularly welcome applications from women. I would also encourage members of ethnic minority groups and people with a disability to apply for these positions so that we can have a board which is representative of our diverse society."

The Board of Trustees has corporate responsibility for ensuring that National Museums fulfils its statutory remit, and delivers on the aims and objectives set by the Executive, the Minister of Culture, Arts and Leisure, and for promoting the efficient, economic and effective use of staff and other resources by the organisation, including safeguarding of public funds and the promotion of propriety and value for money.

All applications for appointment are considered strictly on merit.

The final decision on appointments will rest with the Minister of Culture, Arts and Leisure.

The closing date for applications is 12 noon on 27 September 2013.
