Alliance Party To Raise Funds For NI Hospice
Belfast woman, Una Crudden has created a stir and inspired members of the Alliance Party to host a Coffee Morning at Stormont in a bid to raise vital funds for Northern Ireland Hospice. On Thursday 19 September, MLAs will take part in what is expected to be Ireland's biggest ever coffee morning, with money raised helping to provide care to local adults with terminal illnesses.
Alliance East Belfast MLA Chris Lyttle, who will be hosting the event, said: "It was the dedication that Una has shown in campaigning for Northern Ireland Hospice that has inspired the coffee morning event in Stormont. I hope to see politicians from all parties uniting together for an extremely worthy cause. There has been a tremendous amount of money raised in previous years and I am sure that NI Hospice will reach their target with the support of the public. I would encourage everybody to get involved and help raise funds to care for those with terminal illnesses."
Ross Questions Need For New Regional Standards Body
East Antrim MLA Alastair Ross, Chairman of the Assembly Committee on Standards and Privileges has questioned the call by Lord Bew for a new regional body to be set up in Northern Ireland to advise Stormont on ethical standards.
Lord Bew took up the post as Chair of the Committee on Standards in Public Life earlier in September.
Commenting from Parliament Buildings, Mr Ross said: "These comments are somewhat confusing given that the Committee on Standards in Public Life, the Committee that Lord Bew now Chairs, is a UK wide body, and although principally reporting to Westminster, it does have scope to comment on devolved matters too.
"Only last year the previous Chair of CSPL, Sir Christopher Kelly met with the Committee on Standards and Privileges and Assembly Commission when he visited Northern Ireland, and often spoke about the importance of getting out to the three devolved regions of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
"The Northern Ireland Assembly, and the Committee on Standards and Privileges in particular, takes a keen interest in the work of the Committee at Westminster and will undoubtedly take note of developments when examining the review of our own code of conduct."
Plans Announced To Eradicate TB From The Cattle Population
Agriculture Minister Michelle O'Neill today announced her plans to establish a government/industry Strategic Partnership to develop a long term strategy to eradicate TB from the cattle population in the north.
The Minister made her announcement as she updated the Agriculture and Rural Development Committee on a range of current issues.
Minister O'Neill said that the new Strategic Partnership would be in place by the end of the year, with the associated strategy to be produced within 12 months of the establishment of the Partnership.
She explained: "Eradication of TB is a key priority for me. I want this strategy, which will be jointly owned by government and the industry, to be all embracing and address all the issues such as TB compensation; improving biosecurity; improving communications with farmers and vets; and developing our ability to address the wildlife factor. The strategy should also seek to re-energise relationships with all industry stakeholders; consider as appropriate the enhancement of primary and secondary legislation; and consider other means to tackle and eradicate the disease.
"I do not want to pre-empt what will be in this long term strategy, but I do want to be in a position to support and help implement the various elements. To this end my officials will be trying to ensure that everything is put in place to support any proposals which may come forward."
