Framework Launches To Help The Lives Of Older People
A new Framework that will make a real difference to the lives of older people, their carers and families was launched today by Health Minister Edwin Poots.
The aim of the Framework is to improve the health and wellbeing of older people by promoting social inclusion, reducing inequalities in health and social wellbeing, and improving the quality of care.
The Minister said: "In Northern Ireland we have the fastest growing elderly population in the UK. Currently, over a quarter of a million men and women are of a pensionable age, which is nearly one in six of our population. By 2028 that will have increased to nearly one in five and by 2050 nearly one in four.
"Although the vast majority of older people live independently, others may require some support from family, carers or statutory and independent sector services.
"That is why today, I am delighted and indeed proud to launch the Service Framework for Older People. It sets out what older people can expect in terms of care and support to meet their individual needs."
McDonnell Pays Tribute To John Tierney
SDLP Party Leader Dr Alasdair McDonnell has commended John Tierney as he steps aside from Derry City Council.
Dr McDonnell said: "John Tierney's record of public service is outstanding. He served his party and the people of Derry through good times and bad and never faltered in his personal and professional courage, dedication and commitment.
"From the time that John was first elected to Derry City Council in 1981, through his time as Mayor in 1984-5 and his time on the Northern Ireland Forum and in the inaugural Northern Ireland Assembly, John always impressed his colleagues with his hard work, political insight and love of Derry.
"I know that John will continue to work hard for the SDLP and the party is lucky to have him in Derry, as too, I am sure, are those he works on behalf of."
Woman Convicted Of Benefit Fraud
A woman was convicted at Downpatrick Crown Court for claiming benefits she was not entitled to.
Bronagh Martin (44) of Bells Court, Castledawson claimed Income Support and Housing Benefit totalling £20,548 while failing to declare she was living with her partner. She was given 200 hours community service.
Ms Martin is also required to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.

Older Citizens Gain NI Commissioner
It has taken more than two years to be initiated, but from this week, senior citizens in NI are to have a professional voice lobbying on their behalf. The First Minister Peter D. Robinson and the acting Deputy First Minister John O'Dowd, yesterday announced the appointment of Claire Keatinge as the first Commissioner for Older People.

NI's Older People To Gain Representation
The public are to be asked what they think about a proposal to create an Older People's Commissioner for NI. Stormont Junior Ministers Robin Newton and Gerry Kelly this week launched a public consultation on the issue. The news came as the Ministers hosted an event for older people to celebrate United Nations International Day of Older People.
