Dungannon Man Convicted Of Benefit Fraud

A man from Dungannon has been convicted at Dungannon Magistrates' Court for claiming benefits he was not entitled to.

Michael Bartley (24) of Fairmount Park, Dungannon was given a 12 month conditional discharge for wrongful encashment of Employment and Support Allowance totalling £192.

Mr Bartley is also required to repay any money wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.

Bridge Named After E. Belfast Playwright

A new footbridge to be installed in Victoria Park this weekend is to be named the Sam Thompson Bridge, after a shipyard worker, trade unionist and playwright from east Belfast.

The 62-metre crossing will connect Victoria Park to Airport Road, linking to the Harbour Estate and Titanic Quarter.

The name was selected through the 'Name the Bridge' campaign, which was launched in June.

44% of the public votes received were for Sam Thompson, with Avalon in second place, receiving 29% of the vote.

Council Rolls Out Jogging Programme

Belfast City Council is to roll out a pilot jogging programme after it proved a success in the north of the city.

Jog Belfast is a 10-week, guided project that trains absolute beginners to the stage where they are capable of running 5k.

Sessions are held twice weekly at four different venues and are tailored to the ability of participants.

Belfast City Council has provided a £5,000 grant from its Support for Sport Scheme to North Belfast Harriers, who run Jog Belfast in partnership with Orangegrove AC, Shaftesbury Recreation and Beechmount AC, to allow the programme to expand.

Weekend road victim named
Police have released the name of a 44-year old man who was killed in a road traffic incident at the weekend. Jim Donaghy, from the Donegal Road area of South Belfast, died after the motorbike he was driving was in collision with a car on Sunday afternoon. The incident happened at around 2.30pm in the Temple area of Carryduff.
