M1 Reopens After Security Alert

The M1 motorway has reopened, following an earlier security alert that caused a second chaotic Monday morning in a row for Belfast commuters.

The motorway was closed this morning in both directions between the Lisburn/Saintfield turn-off and at Stockman's Lane.

A diversion was put in place via Stockman's Lane and the Saintfield Road junction at Lisburn.

The M1 was also sealed off following the alert on the Black's Road off-slip in west Belfast.

Tailbacks were reported on the M1 at Moira, with some drivers attempting to divert via the A26.

Other reports suggested tailbacks stretching as far from Belfast as Lurgan in County Armagh.

Knock-on effects of the security alert caused delays on the Lisburn Road, Andersonstown Road, the Hillhall Road, Upper Malone Road and Milltown Road.

This morning's alert was part of a spate of 'hoax' bomb alerts that have been causing traffic disruption to people travelling into Belfast for work over the past week.

A security alert on Saturday morning ended with police saying it had been another hoax.
