N Belfast Derelict Housing Transformed
Derelict housing in north Belfast that had become a target for graffiti and vandalism has been transformed into a new social housing scheme, opened today.
The £1.2m scheme in the Limestone and Halliday's Road area of north Belfast was opened by Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland.
The new development comprises 11 two and three-bedroom units, provided by Apex Housing with part funding from the Northern Ireland Executive.
Minister McCausland said: "This continues to be an area of high housing need and these new modern homes will be a welcome addition to the community. It is one of my key priorities as Housing Minister to ensure that everyone has the right to good quality accommodation and these homes will ensure that.
"I am particularly pleased that these new homes have been built to replace units which suffered from extensive vandalism. Empty derelict homes can be a blight on a community and attract anti-social behaviour.
"This redevelopment will have a positive impact on the local community and ongoing regeneration in the area. There are many benefits in bringing empty derelict homes back into use, not least the provision of much needed housing, and I see the rejuvenation of derelict properties such as these an important means of achieving this."
Gerry Kelly, Apex Chief Executive, attended the launch with Minister McCausland and said: "Apex Housing Association is keen to see derelict housing replaced by new modern energy efficient housing. This is particularly significant at the Limestone Road and Hallidays Road site where this new development of 11 houses will transform this gateway into Tiger's Bay, sending out the message that this is a vibrant community with an exciting future ahead of it."
