Consultation Finds Support For Opt-Out Organ Donation System

82.42% of people support an opt-out system for organ donation, according to a Stormont assembly member.

Under the current system those willing to donate organs must sign the donation register, but a consultation on changing to an opt-out system found overwhelming support for a review of the system.

Under the opt-out system agreement for organ donation is presumed unless the person has specifically chosen not to donate.

There are also provisions made for the wishes of the family, to safeguard children and young people under 18, for those who do not have the capacity to consent, those who are not normally resident in Northern Ireland and those whose identity is unknown.

It is understood that following the consultation a formal drafting of a proposed Bill will begin.
