Minister announces £3.7m funding for Lisburn roads
NIO Minister Angela Smith has confirmed that £3.7 million will be spent on improving roads in and around Lisburn this year.
The Minister said the record level of spending on maintenance would result in widespread improvements to roads in the Lisburn area.
She said: "Last financial year, we invested an all time high of £64 million in maintaining the surfaces and structures of Northern Ireland’s roads. I’m pleased that we will improve on that again by spending almost £70 million, which is not far off the £75 million envisaged by the Regional Transportation Strategy.
"Just a couple of years ago, the average spend was £45 million, which is an indication of how far we have come – although there is still a long way to go.
"Spending on public transport and roads is now a major priority, alongside health and education. The recent Budget has created a new confidence and a real opportunity to make a difference. DRD Roads Service is able to plan within a three-year horizon of certainty and that allows commitment to proceed with both structural maintenance schemes and capital investment projects."
The Minister also confirmed that work on the £6 million M1 Widening between Black’s Road and Stockman’s Lane is scheduled to commence in August.
