Man Guilty Of Natasha McShane Attack

A man has been found guilty of the attempted murder of Co Armagh woman Natasha McShane.

Heriberto Viramontes, 34, was also found guilty of the attempted murder of Ms McShane's friend, Stacy Jurich. The two women were attacked and robbed in the US city of Chicago in the early hours of 23 April 2010.

Ms McShane, who is now 27, was attending the University of Illinois at the time. She was left brain-damaged in the assault and is unable to speak and struggles to walk or carry out simple tasks as a result of the injuries she sustained.

On Thursday afternoon, a jury at Cook County Criminal Court in Chicago began deliberating the 25 charges Viramontes was accused of – the most serious being two counts of attempted murder. Around midnight on Thursday (6pm local time), Ms McShane's family, as well as her friend Ms Jurich and her family, were told a verdict had been reached.

Viramontes was found guilty on all charges. He now faces between six and 120 years in prison. Earlier this year, in July, his accomplice Marcy Cruz was jailed for 22 years after pleading guilty to two counts of attempted murder over the attack.
