Belfast Council Seeks Help For New Bike Scheme
Northern Ireland organisations are being invited to Belfast City Hall on 12 November to attend a bidder's day to help the Council implement its new Public Bike Share Scheme across the city.
The scheme, if it goes ahead, will see 300 bikes and 30 bike docking stations provide low cost transport to service key city centre locations.
The project is part of Belfast City Council’s £150m Investment Programme for the city.
The bidder’s day, organised by Belfast City Council, will provide an opportunity for businesses to hear about the proposal.
Councillor Deirdre Hargey, Chairperson of the council’s Development Committee, said: "As part of our Investment Programme, we have pledged to explore and invest in projects which develop our infrastructure, but also deliver benefits for neighbourhoods across the city.
"The bike scheme is a perfect example of this – not only will the scheme enhance connectivity across the city and encourage people to use and enjoy more of our assets, such as the Lagan Towpath and the National Cycle Network, but it also supports tourism and our wider economy, by providing visitors with new ways to explore what Belfast has to offer.
"Cities across the world are already using public bike schemes to enhance their public transport network and we hope to have our own version up and running by Spring 2015."

Retailer Primark is donating £500,000 to Belfast City Council's City Recovery Investment Fund. The fund is being set up after a number of businesses have been severely affected by the fire at the Bank Buildings which happened over three weeks ago. A cordon remains in place and 14 firms have been closed for up to four months.

Plans To Cut Belfast Bike Scheme Reversed
Plans to cut the Belfast bike scheme have been reversed. The proposals included reducing the free time from 30 minutes to 15 minutes. However, councillors on Belfast City Council's Strategic Policy and Resources Committee voted to keep the scheme as it is. Alliance Councillor Michael Long welcomed the decision.

Alliance Opposes Plans To Cut Belfast Bike Scheme
The Alliance Party has opposed cuts to the Belfast Bike scheme. Plans have been put forward to change the current arrangements of the first 30 minutes being free reduced to 15 minutes. However, Group Leader Michael Long said it would only result in an annual saving of £15,000 when implemented with other new measures.

Belfast Announces Charges For Public Bike Scheme
Belfast City Council has agreed charges for Northern Ireland’s first public bike hire scheme, the pilot phase of which is to be introduced in March 2015. The Council has also announced the locations for the 30 docking stations that will be involved in the first phase of the scheme.
