Carer Charity Manifesto Launched

A Northern Ireland charity that seeks to help carers and their families has published its manifesto, following concerns of increased pressures on health and social care institutions.

CAUSE has said that the government's 'Transforming Your Care' (TYC) scheme could put pressure of carers across Northern Ireland.

The manifesto is being launched today at Stormont.

Census data has shown that the number of carers increased from 185,000 to 214,000 in Northern Ireland between 2001 and 2011.

One in ten of all carers in Northern Ireland suffer from ill health. This number rises to one in five for those providing substantial care.

The highest proportions of carers suffering ill health are found in Belfast where 14% of all carers are in poor health and 24% of those are caring for over 50 hours a week.

Carers save the Northern Ireland economy £4.4bn a year with the unpaid care they provide, according to CAUSE.
