Young People Hold 'Positive' Outlook
Young people in Northern Ireland hold an optimistic outlook on the future of the region with regard to issues such as peace walls, flags and emblems and the past, according to a new study.
The Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister recently commissioned a report entitled 'Measuring Young People’s Perspectives on Sharing and Integration in Northern Ireland'.
The results show support for greater levels of contact and integration, both social and in education.
There was also clear support identified for the removal of peace walls.
91% of respondents thought social contact between the communities was necessary and were happy meeting people from any background.
65% were in favour of mixed schooling.
75% felt that integration at community interfaces was possible.
The same amount thought peace walls are no longer needed and 67% felt they prevent better relations.
But the report also said young people are unsure about their social and economic future. 75% aspire to a better life in Northern Ireland but the 53% majority who would like to stay do not have any great strength of conviction about the idea.
The report also found that "a clear majority were not sectarian in their attitude".

NI Peace Walls 'Necessary'
Over two thirds of people living close to Northern Ireland’s peace walls cannot imagine a time when they will not be necessary, according to new research. The study, carried out by University of Ulster, showed that almost 4 out of five people in Northern Ireland say segregation of communities is common, even where there are no peace walls.
