Belfast Urged To Support Filipino Community
Belfast City Council has urged residents to show solidarity with Filipino friends and neighbours, following the devastation left by Typhoon Haiyan.
The storms, one of the most powerful ever recorded on land, hit the coastal Philippine provinces of Leyte and Samar on Friday.
It is thought that up to 11 million people have been affected.
"I am sure we have all been deeply touched with the death and devastation we have seen on our television screens over the past few days," said Councillor Maire Hendron, Chairman of Belfast City Council’s Good Relations Partnership.
"The Filipino community here plays an important role in Belfast society, not least in our health service, and I am sure many of them have been personally affected by the horrific events which have unfolded in their homeland as a result of Typhoon Haiyan. In addition to the aid which is now being sent to the Philippines, I would ask the people of our city to reach out to their neighbours and see what practical help we here locally can offer them at this difficult time."

Health Minister Mike Nesbitt has announced the launch of a new 'Pharmacy First for Sore Throat' service, which will be available in community pharmacies across Northern Ireland from 1 December 2024. The service will offer advice, assessment, and treatment for people aged five and over who are suffering from a sore throat.
