Firm Fined For Acting Without Licence
The owner of a scrap metal firm has a admitted keeping, depositing and treating controlled waste without a licence.
Robert John Mulholland of Mulholland Scrap Metals Ltd, based at Maine Road, Shanksbridge, Ballymena, County Antrim, has been fined £45,000.
According to a report by the BBC the court heard that up to 80% of the company's land was covered in scrap metal, including cars and car parts.
It is understood that following a visit from the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) to the company's premises on 29 June, 2010, the NIEA subsequently wrote to Mr Mulholland, who was the director and sole shareholder in the business, to advise him that he was operating without a waste management licence.
This was followed by a second visit to the site in June 2011, at which point Mr Mulholland claimed that he was working with a consultancy firm to apply for a waste management licence.
However, the NIEA claimed that they didn't receive this application until six months after their second visist.
Mr Mulholland was granted four months to pay off his fine.

Couple Win £2,500 In Case Against Car Dealer
A couple who claimed they were racially harassed while buying a car from a dealer have been awarded £2,500 in compensation. Kin Hung Wong, of Chinese descent, and his wife Ms Law took the case against John Mulholland Motors under the Race Relations Order with the support of the Equality Commission.

NIEA Prevent Fuel Laundering Waste In South Armagh
The Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) has acted swiftly to prevent dumped fuel laundering waste in South Armagh from polluting a local river. Two 1,000 litre containers were abandoned just off the Mullaghduff Road, Cullyhanna at the weekend. One had been burned and only the metal frame and some plastic remained.
