NI's Biodegradable Waste Continues To Fall
Environment Minister Mark H Durkan has welcomed two new reports that show the amount of local authority collected biodegradable waste landfilled continues to fall.
This waste type, which has the highest environmental impact, fell by more than 33,000 tonnes in 2012/13, the second target year of the Northern Ireland landfill allowance scheme.
Council collected municipal recycling increased by 0.4 percentage points to 38.7% whilst household recycling remained unchanged at 39.7%. There was also a favourable drop in both the amount of municipal and household waste by over 3.7%.
Minister Durkan said: "Maintaining the high performance achieved by Councils last year by continuing to exceed their biodegradable waste landfilled targets is a significant achievement. "Although there continues to be a reduction in waste being produced, a slowdown in the growth of recycling rates demonstrates we cannot afford to be complacent – all of us can easily convert our waste to a resource by simply using the kerbside recycling service provided by councils."
Five Injured In Road Accident
Five people have been taken to hospital following a serious two car accident in Co L'Derry.
The accident happened on Glenshane Road, at around 8.15pm on Wednesday night.
In attendance at the scene, was the Fire Service who had to free a woman who had become trapped in one of the vehicles.
Police later confirmed five people had been taken to Altnagelvin Hospital with "serious injuries".
The road has since re-opened to traffic. No further details have been released.
Gun Found Following House Search
The army bomb squad was called to a scene in east Belfast on Thursday morning following the discovery of a suspected gun.
Police were searching homes in the Bloomfield Drive area of the city when the discovery was made. It is understood the searches were part of an investigation into organised crime, UTV has reported.
The firearm has since been removed for further examinations, while the area has re-opened to traffic and residents.

Pedestrian Dies Following Road Traffic Collision Ikn West Belfast
A female pedestrian in her 70s has tragically died following a road traffic collision in west Belfast on Saturday, 9th November. The incident occurred on Hannahstown Hill shortly after 6:50pm when two pedestrians were struck by a vehicle. Emergency services attended the scene, and the injured pedestrians were taken to hospital.
