Family of murdered pensioner call for UN investigation

SDLP Mid Ulster representative Denis Haughey has backed a group of Tyrone families who have called on the United Nations rapporteur for summary executions to investigate the killings of their loved ones.

Among the families being backed was that of 76-year-old Roseanne Mallon who was shot dead by loyalists on the outskirts of Dungannon in May 1994.

Mr Haughey said: “The British government has yet to comply properly with European Human Rights law by overhauling the justice system fully so that the truth can properly be established here in the North.

"In particular the failure of the inquest procedure to establish the truth surrounding the killing of Roseanne Mallon has left the Mallon family with no option but to raise the matter with the United Nations.

“The SDLP believes that all the victims of the troubles are entitled to the truth and we will be supporting these families all the way to the United Nations.”

Last year Mrs Mallon's family called for an independent public enquiry into the killing after making public police and army documents received by their legal team 18 months previous, which they claim prove there was collusion.

A surveillance camera was later found at the scene just outside Dungannon.
