Ballymena firm wins £7m contract

Ballymena-based bus builder, Wrightbus has won a £7 million contract to supply vehicles to a company in Hong Kong.

Kowloon Motor Bus Company (KMB), one of the world’s biggest bus operators, will take on 50 new generation double-deck buses from the firm as part of the contract.

A spokesperson for the company described the news as "tremendous". He added: "The KMB contract is a tremendous boost for our export drive which has also recently produced a £6.5 million repeat order of 102 single deck buses from Arriva-Nederlands.

"We’ve been working for over four years with KMB on the development of a bus that meets their objectives in terms of operating efficiency, passenger comfort and low emissions of carbon and nitrogen."

The new bus will be the first of its type in Hong Kong featuring an innovative design with enhanced safety features, full air conditioning, the latest passenger information system and aircraft style interiors, allowing almost 122 passengers to enjoy unparalleled levels of comfort. The buses will begin joining KMB’s existing fleet on almost 4,500 vehicles from this July.

KMB currently serves 400 routes in Kowloon, New Territories and into mainland China and carries over three million passengers every day.
