Major Improvement Scheme For Castlederg

Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy has announced that a major improvement scheme is to be undertaken in Castlederg.

The £200,000 project for the B50 Drumquin Road, 4km south of Castlederg, is due to begin on Monday 20 January.

A total of 1,150 metres of the main Castlederg to Drumquin to Omagh Road will be resurfaced under the works, which will take place from 400 metres north of the Carncorran Road junction with the B50 to 750 metres south of the junction.

Due to the restricted carriageway width available on the Drumquin Road, and to help minimise congestion between the site works and through traffic, it will be necessary to close the section while work in underway. The closure is planned to come into operation on Monday 3 February and last until the scheme is substantially completed on Friday 7 February.

Traffic will be diverted via Victoria Bridge and Newtownstewart. Local access will be retained.

Minister Kennedy said: "The scheme will strengthen and improve the quality of the carriageway on this important section of road between Castlederg and Drumquin and road users will quickly realise the benefits of this significant investment."

NI Households '£43 Worse Off Each Week' – Flanagan

Sinn Féin Vice-Chair of the Enterprise committee, Phil Flanagan MLA, has asked the Executive to re-examine the economic relationship with the British Exchequer following confirmation that households in Northern Ireland are an average of £43 per week worse off than those in Britain.

Mr Flanagan said: "Figures which I have received in response to a question to the Finance Minister, Simon Hamilton on disposable income per region shows that for 2010 which are the most recent available show that the average disposable income per household in the North is £2,240 per annum less than the British average.

"In fact it is £7,140 per year worse off than households in London which is where the British Chancellor's economic policies are designed to have the most beneficial impact.

"The British economy has greater regional disposable income differentials than any other European economy with households in the North of Ireland suffering the worst effects of its fiscal policies.

"The imbalances within the British economy are as a direct result of British economic and monetary policy which takes no account of unique social and economic conditions outside of London and particularly in the North of Ireland."

Mr Flanagan continued: "This together with George Osborne's stated intention yesterday to 'finish the job' with a continued welfare cuts agenda following the next election ensures that those on low incomes or benefit dependent will be trapped in a never-ending poverty cycle.

"These figures and the British Chancellor's uncaring attitude to the plight of the most vulnerable in society must surely persuade any party who claims to have the welfare of those who elected them at heart, that clearly the fiscal link between the North and Britain requires an urgent reassessment."

Attempted Robbery In Castlederg Town

SDLP Candidate Jim McIntyre has condemned the attempted robbery of a Castlederg business and a threat to its owner.

The attempted robbery, which occurred in the Diamond area of the town, is believed to have occurred at around 2.15pm on Monday. One man, armed with a knife, is thought to have entered the premises and demanded money.

Mr McIntyre labelled the attempted robbery as "a disgusting act committed by those who apparently have no respect for the community of work of small businesses.

"My thoughts go to the owner of the business who had to endure this awful and stressful ordeal and should be commended for their brace actions which stopped the robbery and resulted in the thug leaving the business empty handed."

Anyone with information on the incident or those involved is asked to contact the police.
